The heart of Russia is the history filled, exquisite city of Moscow. Red Square has a history dating back to the 15th century, when Ivan III ordered all wooden buildings that surrounded the Kremlin be torn down since they threatened it with fire. This open area was then allotted for a market which was called Trade Square. In the 16th century the name was changed after completion of the Church of Saint Trinity (which was later replaced with the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed.) Red Square, its modern name, was officially recognized in the 19th century even though that designation had been cited in some documents two centuries earlier.

In the 15th century the Kremlin Wall with its three towers acted as protection for Red Square. The next century the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed and a place of execution became part of the square. Throughout the 19th century, the building of the Historical Museum, Upper Trade Rows, and monuments to Minin and Pozharsky added to the variety surrounding the square. Last century, the final addition to modern Red Square was established--the Lenin Mausoleum.

For centuries the Kremlin in Moscow has witnessed both tragic and famous historic events. Now it is one of the largest museums in the world. Russian state jewels, priceless icons, and other treasures of the tsars are kept in the Kremlin. Architect Pietro Antonio Solari designed the Kremlin and its Spasskaya Tower, one of the most harmonious and beautiful towers ever built. It was so valued by the people that they considered it sacred and it was forbidden to pass astride through the Spasskaya Gate.

Moscow, known also as a city of the arts, boasts a fine classical building in the Theater’s Square--the Bolshoi Theatre. It is the second largest theatre in Europe. By the time the Bolshoi was built, the theatrical company which gave it its name had existed for 500 years. The Bolshoi’s inaugural performance was “The Triumph of Muses.” Today uniquely beautiful ballets, operas, and other venues utilize this classic structure.

State Tretyakov Gallery holds Russian fine arts encompassing the 10th to the 20th centuries. It was established by Pavel Tretyakov, a Moscow merchant and textile manufacturer, but has since become the National Museum. The downtown area of Moscow also contains many four-star hotels, restaurants offering international cuisine, and shops providing merchandise from countries worldwide. The tourist sites make Moscow a city no traveler should miss.
